Description

This is the history of Centrecare – a social welfare agency which came into existence and succeeded against all odds. Against the backdrop of a rapidly changing nation, this book traces the hard-fought development of Centrecare from a small band of volunteers offering few services and under the firm direction of the Perth Archbishop in 1970 to the $35 million not-for-profit organisation that offered 68 services across 11 branches in 2023; an organisation that is not afraid in its pursuit of justice to challenge the Catholic Church.

Dr Angeline O’Neill was Head of English at the University of Notre Dame Australia for 25 years, where she taught, researched and published extensively in areas ranging from Social Justice to Irish literature to First Nations literatures. She has co-edited an anthology of Australian Aboriginal literature, Those Who Remain Will Always Remember. Angeline has received national awards for her teaching and course design, and was a visiting scholar at the University of Ottawa, Canada. She is particularly interested in issues of freedom and oppression, and the problematic relationship between religion, politics and justice. She now writes full-time.
