This story is not of their achievements and failures but of their thoughts and hopes and fears and feelings …

In fifteenth-century Florence, Lorenzo de’ Medici stands at the centre of a dazzling but dangerous world of power, art, money and ambition. Told through the eyes of Caterina, a Medici slave keeping a secret journal, this vivid portrait reveals the loneliness beneath Lorenzo’s brilliance and the tension between public duty and private feeling. As his wealth and influence grow, he comes into bitter conflict with Friar Girolamo Savonarola, with destructive consequences for both. Magnifico brings Renaissance Florence to life as a story of beauty, power, love and the cost of living at history’s centre.

About the author:

Jan Wallace Dickinson has lived for many decades between Australia and Italy, for the past twenty-five years, based in Florence. Her background is in Italian History and Literature, with postgraduate studies on the early Medici. She has worked as editor, bookseller and translator. Her first work of fiction was The Sweet Hills of Florence, a novel of the Resistance and civil war in Florence during WWII as the partisans fought the retreating German Army and the remnants of the Fascist troops.
