Reminiscent of Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, this book will resonate long after you have finished reading it.
Though a crime fiction book, the genre allows the reader to engage with bigger questions than just whodunit (though of course, that’s important):
- How tolerant are we of disability, especially intellectual disability?
- Does our society’s instinct to treat intellectually disabled adults as though they are children actually cause harm of its own kind?
- Organised religion constitutes a central motif in the book – churches are targeted by an arsonist, yet it’s in church that Red feels welcomed. How have the scandals that have rocked the church affected the ability of religion to argue for a better, more tolerant, more engaged society?
- What motivates people to be good?
But however worthy, While I Have Pedro is, above all, an engrossing and entertaining read!
